Founded by L.L. Tirrell, W.H. Gast, and H.E. Howard, Gast began as a partnership making insecticide sprayers for fruit trees. It expanded from a small operation, with W.H. Gast initially a silent partner, into the Tirrell Manufacturing Company.
The company adopted the name Gast Manufacturing Corporation and shifted focus from fruit sprayers to paint spray guns. W.H. Gast became full-time manager after partners Tirrell and Howard left.
Gast developed its first high-speed air pump, a major innovation, and expanded the plant. The Great Depression hit, challenging the company’s survival.
A fire destroyed the Bridgman plant, causing significant loss of equipment and inventory. Gast faced financial strain due to limited insurance coverage.
